MAC'S FIRST K-LASER TREATMENT

I took Mac in this morning for his first laser treatment. They were going to take him in the back but I wanted to watch and felt like Mac would be more comfortable with me in the room. So they set up one of the exam rooms. First, we all had to put on protective glasses.

He started rotating the laser at the top of his spine and worked his way down, spending about 6 minutes.  Then he moved to his hips, followed by each of his knees (cranial cruciate ligaments). By then, poor Mackie’s legs were shaking… he had been standing up the entire time.  I was there 45 minutes so I’m guessing the entire treatment was 30 minutes, about 6 minutes on each area.

Since it’s a heated laser, he could leave the laser in one spot but Mac didn’t seem to mind or feel any discomfort except he was scared. It probably felt good. I asked him if he could do my back when he was finished.  Ha!

They said I might notice a difference tomorrow or the next day or that he could be very sore from the treatment.  I’ll see how he reacts to his afternoon walk or if he wants to go. He’s good about letting me know.  The next treatment is Wednesday.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Wishing you peace, prosperity, lots of love & happiness in 2013.

K-LASER

When I took Mac to the vet the other day for his bi-annual blood panel, my vet told me he is trying this new innovative treatment called K-Laser. It’s little flashes of light to stimulate cell activity and increase blood flow, which increases circulation. It reduces inflammation, stiffness, speeds healing and provides pain relief.  He said the only thing your pet might feel is a little warmth so he keeps it moving.

Lasers have gained popularity in the last few years because of their ability to treat such a wide range of ailments.  They are FDA approved and can be used on both humans and animals.  I read the brochure and also looked it up online. I read about a paralyzed dog with two ruptured discs that could walk again after 5 treatments.

He would start out with 3 treatments the first week, 2 the second week, 1 the third and then as needed but probably once a week for a while.  The brochure said the majority of patients had more mobility within 12 to 24 hours after treatment.

Mac’s back right leg has been wobblier than usual.  Petsmart quit carrying the Avoderm Senior so I tried a variety of other holistic foods, including Acana, which is wonderful but it has too much protein.  He just seems to walk better with the Avoderm. After contacting every nearby pet food store to see if they could get it for me, I am ordering it online.  It will take a while to get back in his system but between the Adequan shots, the Avoderm and now the K-Laser, I’m hoping to keep him walking for many more years.

BYE BYE PITTIES

When I got to the warehouse this morning, there were only 23 dogs left.  A few more had been transported to fosters or rescues since Monday.  I was so happy to hear that.  And then we found out that the rest were going to the next transition destination in finding their forever homes as well.

A K9 psychologist came in today and was evaluating each dog.  I not sure how accurate his assessment was because they don’t like men for the most part.  But he took a few with him and so I was just grateful he took any.  Scotland, the president of ARC, is taking 4 with him to the East Coast, and the rest are going to a farm in Cheatham County, outside of Nashville, and ironically, the county they came from.

Since they will be outside, some of the volunteers were building mini shelters or sheds for them from what I understand and will continue to help with their care.  At least they will get to run around a little but will still be in crates for the most part.  And ARC will continue to try and find other Pit Rescues for them.

Apparently, a lot of “rescues” heard about them and contacted ARC but they did a thorough check on each one and turned some down. Some people are both stupid and evil. A lot of the volunteers were teary because after working with the dog’s day-in and day-out, they developed a strong bond.  Probably a good thing I wasn’t there from the beginning.

So today was mostly clean up.  They were still taking the dogs one by one into the changing station but the rest of us were putting together the transport crates, folding down the metal crates and carrying them out for storage, packing up food, bleach and other supplies to split up between a lot of the local shelters who helped out.

I will only say, there was a lot of heavy lifting and when my laundry is done, I will be soaking in the tub.

For those who want to watch the small segment that was on the news, here’s the link:

BACK AT THE WAREHOUSE

I went back to Lebanon today to help with the Pit Bulls…. Good news! They are down to 31 dogs and a transport was supposed to come today from a Pit rescue in Arizona to pick up 4 more.  Operation Broken Chain has gone on longer than most, only because of the breed. Today is Day 26 but with each day, the dogs are becoming more socialized and are really starting to develop personalities.

I got to help feed them this morning.  Sheila distracted them while I put the food in and filled their water dishes. If there was poop by the door, which there always was, I cleaned it up until they could take the time to pull each dog out separately and really clean the pens out.

Gagger that I am, I almost threw up with every pen.  And so after 11, she was kind enough to offer me a new job.  I changed gloves and became the transporter for the rest of the day.  We would pick the crates up, load them on a flat dolly and roll them to the change-out stations. Pick them up again and carry them in.  And back to the floor after clean-out.   It took a lot longer today because they were really playing with the dogs and getting them to do minor obedience training.  So during the down time, we unfolded potty pads again and I did some sweeping and mopping under the crates after they were moved.

VET TIME FOR GARAGE KITTIES

It’s been a year since I trapped Midnight and Charley, so it was time to take them to the vet for their yearly shots. I just did the spay/neuter and rabies shot last year because there were so many cats.  But since they have been living in my garage and I have taken a liking to them, I am having them tested for feline leukemia and giving them all of necessary vaccines this year.

I wasn’t too worried about Midnight; I can pick her up and hold her.  I could probably even let her in the house. But baby girl, Charley, still won’t let me touch her unless she’s eating wet food or treats.  I did get her to purr once but only once.  So I’ve been feeding both of them in the cat carriers for the last week.  I stick the wet food all the way in the back and they go in and eat.  Same with treats.

So yesterday when they were eating, I planned on shutting the doors as soon as they went in.  Charley was just too quick for me and I ended up getting the crap bit out of my hand.  I tried for a half hour but she was having none of it.

Midnight was a champion.  She did well with the blood test and she was negative for FL.  Then she had all of her vaccines and even started kneading the towel in the crate when it was over.  But when I brought her home and let her out, she went under the house and wouldn’t come out for a while so I’m sure it traumatized her.

I’ll try again with Charley. I may have to trap her again.

DAY 2 - DRY SHOES

It was pouring down rain today and the temp took a dive so I was hoping I would be able to stay dry.  Did our 9 am meeting and got right to work.  That’s after someone brought in fresh donuts.  Yum!  I haven’t eaten a donut in years.

Since I got all of the bowls and Kongs washed yesterday, I spent most of the day unfolding puppy pads to line the crates with.  They go through so many of them because they clean the crates twice a day.  As soon as they finish getting them washed, dogs fed & watered, it’s time to start all over again.

I don’t even know how many boxes of pads I unfolded but took huge piles to each of the changing/clean-out stations and left the rest stacked on a table. When there were 2 stacks, both was taller than me, I went to the changing stations and got a new load of dirty dishes and more Kongs, yes…  some covered in poop, put them in the large buckets to soak for a minute before washing them out.

It was kind of fun today because I watched Sheila socializing with the dogs. She would take them one at a time into a large pen, also covered with sheets, but there was a little cutout where I could see in.  She would get them to go through a tunnel, play with toys, fetch a ball, do circles, and jump over a box; giving them training treats each time.  They were all doing so well and so happy to have the human affection and one-on-one time.

The vet came in today and miraculously, out of all the dogs, only one tested positive for heartworm, which is being treated.  They have all been spayed and neutered now.

Painturos brought lunch, pizza, spaghetti, focaccia bread, salad and lasagna, all without meat. I forgot to mention yesterday that the couple brought a lot of veggie stuff too all marked for those who don’t eat meat. I need to go up there every day just for the food.  Ha!

All of the Beagles have now been fanned out to different shelters and rescue groups and there are only Pit Bulls left.  They should start hearing back from some different groups around the country now and hopefully, they will also start going to their next destination so they can further be rehabilitated and adopted out.  It’s going to be much harder for them because of the connotations associated with the breed and the fact that a lot of them were fought.

This lets me see what Beasley went through after she was rescued. It’s kind of stressful for the dogs to be crated up like that for so long – Day 17 – but so much better than where they came from.  They are getting human companionship, food, water, lots of treats and shelter. And if anyone local is reading this, they need puppy pads and hand soap.  There’s plenty of sanitizer but they are running low on pump soap.  And donations are always welcome at http://animalrescuecorps.org/

PIT BULL RESCUE UPDATE

Just got back from the Lebanon warehouse where the pit bulls are being temporarily housed from the fighting ring a few weeks ago.  Meet-up was at 9am and Dani, the onsite volunteer coordinator, gave us a quick briefing.

I started the day by going outside and hosing off some of the crates that were poopy. Little did I know, the hose had sprung a leak that soaked me as soon as it was turned on.  Oh well, it was raining anyway.  When that job was done, I walked my soggy tennis shoes back inside to help with watering.

Some of the dogs had drank all of their water, others had tipped their bowls so we filled those still right side up. In the crates with upside-down bowls, one of us distracted the dogs; the other hurried and turned it right side up or stuck a new bowl in the door.  We then used a plastic watering can to put through the crates to fill the water.

All of the dogs were lined up in rows with sheets or blankets covering their crates except the front.  There was cardboard or some sort of partition between each crate and in back of the crates in some cases so that none of the dogs could see each other.  None of them have been acting aggressive but because they had been bred to fight, this is the best way to do it.

Some of them had no teeth because apparently, if a dog doesn’t show any ability or interest in fighting, they file their teeth down and just breed them.  When they are done, they hang or kill them in some other way.  I know…. Awful!  And these were sweet little guys.  Some of the puppies were just too cute (and noisy).

So back to the squeaky tennis shoes.  One by one, we carried a dog crate into a back fenced-in area also covered in sheets, where we let them out, cleaned their crates, put fresh bedding, puppy pads, food and a new water bowl in.  We also gave them a Kong filled with peanut butter.  Since they are interactive toys, they entertain the dog for hours trying to get that peanut butter out.

Now I do almost consider myself a professional poop cleaner upper but I have to admit, I was getting a little “gaggy” from all the poop.  So I took all the Kongs and dog dishes from the day before and the ones that were being taken out during crate clean up. That was my job the rest of the day.  I washed old peanut butter out of Kongs, filled them back up and stuck them in the freezer.  Then I washed all the dog dishes – more poop – more gagging, but I had on my surgical gloves.  I dried them all, organized all the unused Kongs, stacked-up all the dishes so they were nice and clean to do the same thing all over again.  Washed out a few buckets and was proud of my little tidy space.

Needless to say, there is a lot of laundry going on too.  In fact, since two of the dogs had kennel cough, they told us to wash our clothes right when we got home.  And I’ll shower before jumping into bed with my guys tonight.

One of the things that really touched me was all of the supplies: toys, food, water, soft drinks, bleach, paper towels, you name it - people donated it.  In fact, I took in two cases of water and added them to the about 20 cases that were already there. They had a buffet style table in the office that has better food than my house, which I was grateful for because I didn’t have time to eat.  And at noon, this nice couple brought in crock-pots full of chili, 2 different kinds of taco meat, homemade salsa, refried beans, individually wrapped heated tortillas, lettuce and cheese, even homemade tortilla chips. And it was good!  I guess they’ll go back and get their dishes later.  Yesterday, someone brought in a bunch of pizzas.  Just to help out the volunteers. Thinking about it made me kind of teary on the way home.

And during lunch, we all compared dirty carpet stories, the virtue of vinegar and who makes the best carpet steamer…..  It was a poopy great day!

FREE KITTY CATS

Okay, you all know I’m kidding but I have picked the Christmas tree up off the floor 3 times in the last week, re-hung lights, re-hung bulbs and there are still bulbs under the couch and behind the dryer. Those are the ones I know about.  I wake up in the middle of the night and can hear them batting the bulbs around.

Two nights ago, they broke the glass in a frame from a picture with words that my best friend gave me when I was going through some hard times over 25 years ago.  It has a lot of sentimental meaning.  Luckily, it’s only the glass that is damaged.  It was one out of three. Brolio is too fat to jump that high and George just wants to sleep.

Tonight, they knocked over a lamp on the piano.  Second time I have had to replace the shade and good thing I was home since the lamp was on.

I do love the little shits (yes, I’m swearing in a blog) but they are driving me nuts!  Santa might not fill their stockings this year.

ARC COMES TO THE RESCUE AGAIN

I don’t know what it is about this state. Thank God for rescue groups like ARC…. once again, they are in Tennessee.  This time, it is for a fighting ring about 40 miles NW of Nashville. I hope they can throw the book at this guy.  Cruelty is one charge, but fighting is much more serious.  The dogs had open wounds, exposed and broken bones, they were all emaciated, all trying to break from the short heavy chains - just sickening. They found bones scattered all over the property, and also in burn piles.  It was hard to watch. There was even a noose hanging from a tree.

ANIMAL RESCUE CORPS REMOVES 65 DOGS FROM SUSPECTED FIGHTING OPERATION IN CHEATHAM COUNTY, TN

Ashland City, TN – International non-profit animal protection organization Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) removed 65 dogs from the property of a suspected dog fighting operation today in Ashland City, about 35 minutes west of Nashville, in a rescue mission called Operation Broken Chain.

On Thanksgiving night the Ashland City Fire Department and the Pleasant View Fire Department responded to a brush fire at an Ashland City residence. Their discovery of a large number of dogs chained around the property prompted them to call Cheatham County Animal Control (CCAC) who identified the situation as a suspected dog fighting/breeding operation. CCAC found 65 dogs, mostly American Pit Bull Terriers and some Beagles, all requiring medical attention, none with access to food or fresh water.

“We believe this is the largest dog fighting rescue in Tennessee history,” said ARC President Scotlund Haisley. “The conditions Animal Rescue Corps found on this property are the worst I have ever seen at a dog fighting operation in my 22-year career in animal protection.”

CCAC identified dogfighting paraphernalia such as a treadmill, fighting pen, and a spring pole used for strengthening dogs’ jaws. The dogs are underweight, have sores covering their bodies, and are exhibiting signs of internal parasites, but are all very eager for affection despite their desperate living conditions and medical needs.
“I quickly realized that Cheatham County Animal Control needed support in immediately addressing this situation,” said CCAC Director TJ Jordi. “The Animal Rescue Corps team was on the ground in less than 24 hours to support this rescue operation.”

All the animals on the property were surrendered to CCAC and relocated to an emergency shelter outside of Nashville. Their daily care and medical needs will be met by ARC until they can be assessed for placement and transported to partners around the country.

Animal Rescue Corps performed this rescue in conjunction with: Cheatham County Animal Control; New Leash on Life, a shelter in Lebanon, TN; Agape Animal Rescue out of Nashville; the Nashville Zoo and the Tennessee State Highway Patrol.

And once again, I know everyone is tight this time of year but even 5 bucks can help.  These operations are so expensive.

KITTY TREATS

For all of you kitty parents, I have finally found a treat that every one of my cats will eat.  I think it’s been around a while, although I don’t remember seeing it in Wal-Mart.  But I got a free sample and even Bonita likes it.  She doesn’t like anything.  And Jelly Bean is a little selective, to say the least, as well.

It’s Friskies Crispies.  Knowing cats, I’m not saying yours will like it as much as mine but it’s worth a shot.  It’s $1.50 for a 2.1 oz. Bag. I have tried both the Chicken and the Salmon flavors.  And the good news is, Friskies always has coupons for treats in the paper.

MAKING PROGRESS

Beasley walked out the door by herself this morning. I stood outside and coaxed her but she finally came out.  Or I should say jumped out. She hopped over it like it was going to reach up and grab her by the belly.  I don’t know what it is about the threshold but it scares her.

She’s been going out in the yard all on her own for about a week and a half unless there's a "scary" noise. I just unhook the leash once we go outside and she does her little counter clockwise circle around the yard and if she doesn’t go, I tell her to go back and there she goes again counter clockwise.  But she has ventured a few feet out in the yard to smell on occasion and she comes back in now without hiding behind the table on the deck now.

My handyman was over the other day and so I decided to bring her out of her comfort zone (under the bed) just so that she can learn she will still be safe if someone else is in the house.  She peed all over the floor as I was walking her by him in the kitchen.  So I took her out, she came back in and darted back under the bed again.  But we are making progress.

IT'S STILL DARK OUTSIDE

It’s still dark outside!  Do I really have to get out of bed? I can hold it a little longer, I promise!

I know Beasley has had an extremely rough puppy-hood and still has a long way to go.  And she doesn’t know yet that she hit the jackpot!  But I see improvements all the time.  It’s a back and forth process. In saying that……

Sending extra prayers for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.  More than two-thirds of families have pets and when families are misplaced or homeless, the pets end up in shelters, which are already over-crowed.  The lucky ones make it back with the ones who love them.

REMEMBERING SHORTY

It was one year ago today that I brought Shorty home for the last time from the Crematory.  The day that I found out he had cancer; I bought a little chrysanthemum for $2.50.  It was about 6”. I grabbed it as I was walking out of Lowes.  After he died, I know it’s stupid, but I was mad at it so I didn’t water it.  Just left it on my deck through the winter.

When Spring came, I noticed there was just a little bit of green after I cut off all the dead stuff so I stuck it in the ground in the front yard.  It started growing right away and bloomed shortly thereafter.  Now it’s 4 feet around and it’s blooming again.  I can’t help but think it’s a sign to let me know he is okay.  Miss the little guy.  Beasley reminds me of him when he first came here.  I hope that she will one day have the security and trust that he came to know.

BARKTOBERFEST

What a blast!  Dogs in costumes, more dogs in costumes, people in costumes, vendors, doggie cookies, food trucks, a live band and more dogs in costumes.

I worked the Agape Rescue booth.  The theme was Carnival even though a lot of booths were decorated for Halloween.  I took a bunch of beads, sequins and some boa feathers that we were going to wear around our neck but since we didn’t get the memo that we were supposed to decorate our booth, our “costumes” became our decorations.

One little kid was admiring all of the other booths, walked by ours and said “this one is weird”.  It was a bust-out-loud laughing moment.

Nashville Paw Magazine organized and presented the event.  Quite a few of the vendors were donating their proceeds to Agape, including Pampered Chef, which was very generous of them.

We had Jackson, Junior, Sophie and Daisy up for adoption. Hopefully, someone will have fallen in love with one of them and take them to their forever home.

NEW DISCOVERIES

Beasley has had a week filled with all kinds of new fun.  She's discovered that there is a downstairs in the house.  She will only go to the bottom step but she loves going up and down them. She'll sit or stand on the bottom step, sniff the floor, come back up and repeat.

She has discovered her voice and is barking more. Well... I'm not sure if I would call it a bark just yet, but she is definitely talking.  She even did it while looking out the window once.  And this morning, she joined in the choir with the other dogs while I was making them breakfast.

She found out there is a new dog in the mirror.  She jumps at the mirror (and looks like a frog doing it), jumps back, runs around the house,  jumps at the mirror, jumps back again.... repeat.

She is now eating her vitamins and I bought some mini biscuits and she can chew them. I still give her soft treats but I think the crunch is good for their teeth so I'm happy that she can do that.  She also found the cat box.  I'm not so thrilled about that new discovery.  Stinky and Arthur already think it's a cookie jar so I have to keep the gate up but they sneak in sometimes.

She really loves her toys, the plush ones.  It's very adorable.  But she is still afraid to go outside.  It's a little better at times and yesterday, I took her out with the leash, unhooked it while we were on the deck and she went down to the yard and went potty on her own and ran right back. I was thrilled, especially after walking her for about 20 minutes around the fence in the rain the other morning.  I tried it again later and no such luck.

I think her favorite thing is snuggling in the bed. She looks at me every morning as if to say "Please mommy, I don't want to get up yet".

LEARNING TO SHARE

Ms. Beasley is sharing the dog beds now.  Not even a little grumble.  There’s still a little training when we’re in the big bed, but it’s getting better. We were watching TV last night and Jelly Bean came up to sit on my lap and I could see Beasley getting a little jealous. I held my hand on her head and firmly said no a few times while petting Jelly Bean and she just went right back to sleep.

She’s doing pretty good in the house but had an accident this morning, even though I took her out twice before breakfast.  Thank Heavens for Krud Kutter, rugs and vinegar. She’s so funny in the yard; she has to walk counter-clockwise right at the edge of the fence. I tried to go the opposite way yesterday and it threw her off, she pulled me back to counter-clockwise. This morning, she went potty right away so I unhooked the leash and she had to finish walking around the perimeter of the fence before coming up on the deck to come back in the house.

She is looking a little more relaxed in the yard. Her tail isn’t completely up, but it’s not continually tucked either.

A JEALOUS BONE

Beasley has decided she wants me all to herself. If we are in bed and she’s lying next to me, she growls if anyone tries to come close.  Another noise!  So I hold her really close so that she knows she’s important and then let the other dog(s) up too.  She was still a little grumpy this morning but it was better than yesterday. But trying to get her out of bed is almost impossible.

Her new favorite day bed is under my desk and she also doesn’t want any other dog/cat under there with her.  So we are working on that too.  Jelly Bean was sitting on my lap and she actually got up and growled.  Scared the poor kitty.  It was the first time I scolded her and she went right back down real fast.  She looked like she understood.  It was very cute.

She has now joined all of my other Krazy Kritters in the wild welcome I get when I walk in the door.

BABY STEPS

No accidents in the house all day yesterday or so far today.  I think she might be “getting it” that we go potty outside.

Yesterday, I was out trimming some low branches and growth along the fence and took all the dogs out with me.  Normally she just stays on the deck, but she ventured into the yard and went potty all on her own.  Then darted right back on the deck, poor little thing.

But this morning, she did not want to walk.  I’m not sure why, it was early and there wasn’t any traffic.  Didn’t see a soul.  She was more terrified than I’ve ever seen her so I brought her home. She couldn’t wait to get up that driveway and into the garage.  I don’t want to scare her so much that she won’t want to try again.  I’m going to give it a break for a while. It took me over 2 years to walk Shorty.

It was a picture-perfect morning so I took all of them out with me while I read the paper.  She didn’t leave the deck without the leash but did lie down and relax.  I think after time, she’ll trust that it’s safe to be outside and it will make it easier to try walking her again.

And… when I got a home this afternoon, we went potty the first time on the leash and after I fed them, I opened the door and out she came on her own. She didn’t leave the deck but all in good time. Little moments like these are like watching your baby take it’s first steps. Very rewarding.

BEASLEY BARKED

Maybe it was more like she talked.  Her and Jazz were playing, chasing each other and as a lot of you know, Jazz is very vocal.  Beasley barked once. Wow! I had a few friends tell me Jazz should probably not be the one teaching her. They are right but I'll take it.  We’re still working on everything else.  But at least she is consistent and goes on the same rug every time so I have protective lining under it.

Guess it’s a good rug. The cat puked on it last night.

I waited a week to vacuum because I was sure the noise would scare her. She walked right up to it!  I was very happily surprised since it sometimes need a daily dose.

BEASLEY - WHAT ELSE!

Lil’ Beasley has discovered toys! In fact, she is amputating a Crazy Legs Cow as I write this.  I think she just might be getting a lot of dollar store toys from here on out.

As much as she has progressed in the house, she has taken a step back in going outside, mostly inside the fenced area. Even though I walk her out on the leash, she just wants to bolt straight for the door to come back in.  She’s skittish, tucks her tail and it’s easy to tell she’s terrified.  They said she could have damaged her teeth by chewing on the chain fence trying to break out or even trying to eat rocks because she was so hungry.  I’m wondering if the fence brings back horrible memories.

Yesterday was really difficult for her. I repeatedly took the other dogs out so she could watch through the doors, and even though she showed curiosity, she really did not want to go outside.  Today was a little better with cheese as the great motivator. A mommy's girl already - I'd do about anything for cheese too.

She is now eating in the kitchen and gets very excited when it’s time to eat, like the other “kritters”.  All in all, she really has made remarkable strides and I think Melinda has a new best bud. They are hilarious together. And… I need new carpet.

BEASLEY

Sweet little Beasley has taken to me like a fish in water. My new furry shadow knows I’m her mommy; she loves scratches and even offered me her belly yesterday. This… from a scared little pooch who wouldn’t let anyone close except her foster mom.  She’s a really good little sleeper, loves to cuddle and would probably sleep through the night without any problem.  But since I usually have to get up with Melinda, I walk her out too.

She doesn’t want to be out in the yard except to go potty and I have to walk her out on the leash.  I can’t say I blame her after her experience with the great outdoors.  She does seem to like her walks.  She is wide-eyed, checking out all the smells and is a good match to walk with Arthur. Except when the racer-looking motorcycle turned the corner this morning and revved up his engine 4 times.  She wanted to bolt. She was terrified the rest of the way home. Her tail came back up as soon as we walked in the door. I hope this doesn’t scar her for tomorrow’s walk.

I’m pretty sure she was playing yesterday. It started when I was doing an exercise tape. She peeked into the room, ran around like crazy and then came back and peeked in the room again over and over.  Then she started again when I was in the kitchen making dinner.  It was very cute.

It didn’t take long to discover the dog beds, the water bowls and sniff out the toy box. I still have to coax her to eat (under the desk), but she will finish the bowl.  I think it hurts her to eat crunchy food because of the teeth she’s had taken out. Luckily, since I cook, it makes gravy and softens the dry food. She’s not interested in biscuits so I’ve been giving her small chunks of string cheese, which she likes. I’ll pick-up some soft treats for her this week.

I really couldn’t ask for it to go any smoother.  Even the kitties aren’t afraid of her.

IT'S A GIRL!

Meet Beasley Camille.  She was rescued from a Lebanon, TN hoarding situation on July 3rd along with over 100 other dogs in what they dubbed Operation Freedom.  They had no access to food, water or shelter and were in deplorable conditions.  It was way over 100 degrees. Some were blind, had broken legs, just a heartbreaking situation.

First they took them to the fairgrounds and then after about a week, baths and a lot of medical care, they went to rescue groups all over the country.  Beasley has been with a foster mom and that was the first human contact she had ever had.  They didn’t think she would let me touch her today, the main goal was introducing her to her new pack and making sure they all got along.  I knew she’d come around eventually and trust me.  But I am petting her and she’s following me around a little.

She’s hiding under the desk right now and I know it’s going to be a long process but it’s something I’ve done before and have the patience for. She finally went to sleep so I think she’s feeling more comfortable. They thought she would come out of her shell quicker with other dogs because that’s what she’s used to being around.

She didn’t go potty for 3 days after they rescued her (no food) and then threw-up for a few days after that. They had to extract 7 of her teeth and she’s had multiple litters of puppies, none of which survived.

First we walked her with Mac and Melinda. Brought them home and walked her with Jazz and Stinky.  Then walked her with Arthur.  We put her and Arthur in the back yard when we got home and let Jazz out. Then we let Mac and Melinda in the yard and then Stinky. After a few minutes, they just ignored her.  So we brought them all in the house together.

It took a few minutes and Stinky and Arthur tried to do the naughty with her even though they don’t have the equipment.  She actually growled at Stinky once, the first noise she’s made since they rescued her.  When they all started barking, the look on her face was priceless.  But she didn’t make a peep.

I walked her all around the house on a leash so she could smell everything and she thoroughly checked it all out except the kitty room. It helped having her foster mom and two adoption coordinators come to help maneuver the meet and greets.  Or maybe I should say smells and tails.

Updates coming soon.

Here’s the youtube video and I think it’s Beasley in one of the first crates at about 1:24 minutes.

MAJOR BREAK-THROUGH

I think it was the very first part of December 2011, when I finally caught Charley (Charcoal) and had her fixed.  She does lay in the road sometimes and across the street trying to chase squirrels but for the most part, she comes to me when called but DEFINITELY shows up every day at 3pm for the canned food feeding (actually more like 2 or at least 2:30). She is a really good kitty. Fortunately, her mommy, Midnight, stays much closer to home and is also right there for the wet food.

Tonight, she let me scratch her and while she got scared, she gave in and let me scratch her again for a while.  I've been trying since I first started feeding them and sometimes have gotten close, but only while she's eating and has been distracted.  Like I said, major breakthrough!  Happy Days!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROLIO

As I sadly remember those who were lost on 9/11, I also remember the happy day I adopted my sweet little kitty, Brolio, and his mommy, Bella, four years ago.  He’s a big boy now (okay, that’s an understatement) but a happy boy who snuggles up to the dogs on the bed and likes to jump on me in the middle of the night, all 23 lbs. of him….

Also missing my Bella, who died 2 years ago from liver failure.  I’m grateful she got to experience love, trust, and a warm house with lots great food before she went to Heaven.

LADY SUES PET RESORT

I thought this was an interesting article.  This lady is suing a doggy daycare because a Pit attacked her dog while she left him there during the day.  I’m not jumping on the Pit Bull bandwagon, Sundance was part Pit, and it could have been any breed.

The kennel owner is saying her dog was the aggressor. It doesn’t matter who the aggressor was, they shouldn’t have put them in the same pen. If the kennel owner thought her dog was aggressive, then he should have kept him separate or not taken him at all.

I agree with her, her dog lost his eye and they should have been more responsible.

LIQUID BENEDRYL FOR GEORGIE

For those of you who follow, I wrote a blog a few months ago about Georgie’s Dermatitis caused by her allergies.  I tried the children’s liquid Benedryl with a syringe down her throat, all she did was hiss, spit it up (all over the house) foam at the mouth and hide.  Then I tried shoving a Benedryl pill down her throat, that didn’t work either. I tried putting it in her food, both crushed and liquid, she wouldn’t touch it.

I ended taking her to the vet for a steroid shot, which worked.  But that usually only lasts a month and it’s not good to give them too often.  So I had a thought, because cat’s groom themselves so often, I would put the liquid Benedryl on her coat.  I don’t know if it’s a coincidence and her allergies just aren’t as severe, but I think it’s working.  She probably takes her paw, licks it, wipes her fur, licks it again and so on… like cat’s do. She still has a few bumps but it is so much better.

ANOTHER RESCUE OPERATION IN TENNESSEE

After writing my blog yesterday about the 100+ dogs rescued last week from Wilson County, sure enough…. here we go again.  Yesterday, 70 animals were rescued from White County, Tennessee, which is about 75 miles SE of Nashville.

This time, it wasn’t only dogs, but a donkey, cats, chickens and rabbits. And this was supposed to be an animal rescue facility. None of the animals had access to food or water.  According to ARC, the conditions were deplorable.  Most of the animals were underweight and suffered from parasites and untreated wounds. Some of them were even chained in the woods.

Once again, Animal Rescue Corps saved the day by loading them all up and taking them to the fairgrounds in Nashville. On top of the 100 dogs rescued last week, this has now become a $60,000 operation from start to finish.  It’s so expensive to take care of all of these critters and make sure they are rehabilitated and adopted out to new homes.

What the heck is wrong in Tennessee? This is the 5th time in the last 18 months that ARC and our local rescue groups have joined to swoop in and rescue critters from a major hoarding, puppy mill or abuse situation.  I think there should be stiffer cruelty laws.  If anyone wants to donate, here’s the link to ARC. I don’t know if the site is updated (they have been busy) but it would sure help them out.  And they do travel wherever there is need.  In the last year, they have been to Canada, Kentucky, Arizona and many other states performing similar operations.
